Belgium arrests two men over alleged terror plot on Euro 2016 games

BRUSSELS, June 26 (UPI) -- Two men believed to be connected with a planned attack on Euro 2016 public fan zones have been arrested in Belgium.

"One man was arrested in (the eastern town of) Verviers and another man in Tournai," near the French border, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor said.

The arrests come 10 days after Belgian law enforcement authorities received an anti-terror alert warning about Islamic State fighters planning to attack public areas where soccer fans gather in Brussels to watch Euro 2016 games broadcast from France, Sky News reported.

"It is too soon to talk about a terror attack,' the federal prosecutor's spokesman said. "The two men have to be questioned first."

Belgian authorities arrested three men in connection with terrorism June 19, including charges of attempting to commit murder, following an overnight sweep.

Two IS militants were killed by Belgium police in January 2015 during a raid in Verviers. The two were found to be linked to terrorist cells involved in the Paris and Brussels attacks.

Belgium has been on level three terrorist alert since the November Paris attacks and the March attacks at the Brussels airport and a metro train station there which left 32 people dead. Level three means there is a serious, possible or probable attack pending.
