BRUSSELS, June 6 (UPI) -- Three people were killed and dozens injured when a passenger train and a cargo train collided in eastern Belgium on Sunday night, according to local police.

The passenger train was carrying about 40 people when it rammed into the back of the cargo train traveling on the same track near the province of Saint-Georges-Sur-Meuse on Sunday night. The collision killed the driver of the passenger train, Belgium's national railway said in a statement.

Francis Dejon, major of Saint-Georges-Sur-Meuse province, said the front carriage of the passenger train had completely folded back on itself.

The passenger train was traveling between Liege and Namur at about 55 mph when it hit.

"Two of the six carriages derailed and are lying on the tracks," said Infrabel and national rail operator NMBS/SNCB in a statement.
