Google Doodle honors Sigmund Freud's 160th birthday

WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Google honored famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's 160th birthday with a muted Doodle on its homepage which focuses on the subconscious.

Created by artist Kevin Laughlin, the Doodle imagines Freud's face as the tip of an iceberg in a deep blue ocean.

Behind his face, an iceberg's base floats undetected symbolizing Freud's well-known and still much-debated method of interpretation, which is to look for meaning beyond the surface of the visible.

"More importantly, the design draws our eye to the horizon, reminding us how the genius of Freud's practice rests in the space between doctor and patient, reader and text, human and world," reads an explanation on the Google Doodle page.

Freud, born in Moravia in 1856, was not only a psychoanalyst but also a physiologist, medical doctor and psychologist. A great influence on 20th century thinking, Freud spent much time explaining the significance of the unseen -- the subconscious, unconscious truth behind what people present themselves as.

He also was a champion of symbolism behind peoples' actions and dreams as well as analyzing the suppressed sexuality in individuals. His unique methods of interpretation are still used today.
