Israeli boy dangles from bridge after truck overturns

By Andrew V. Pestano

JERUSALEM, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A dramatic rescue took place near the Israeli city of Haifa where a 14-year-old boy dangled from a bridge after a truck overturned and fell on narrow supporting beams.

The incident occurred on Sunday on the Somech Junction of Highway 70 in the Galilee region. The truck slid across the bridge due to heavy winds and rains, causing it to hit the bridge's railings and flip over.

The truck and its passengers, the boy and his 48-year-old father, were prevented from falling up to 50 feet to a highway below by getting caught in a support-beam structure.

A rescue operation was then launched by nearby firefighters and rescue teams. The father sat trapped in the partially crushed truck cabin, while the boy was already partially thrown out from the window -- holding on desperately to a cement beam while waiting for rescue teams to arrive.

A special crane was rushed to the scene after attempts using a ladder failed. The boy and father were retrieved safely and admitted to Haifa's Rambam Medical Center in a moderate condition.
