SRINAGAR , India, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Ten Indian soldiers were trapped by an avalanche early Wednesday at their military post at 19,000-feet elevation in the Kashmir province.
The avalanche struck the post, sometimes described as the world's highest battlefield, in the Northern Glacier sector of Ladakh province in Kashmir, Col. S.D. Goswami said. The area is contested by Pakistan and India.
He said army and air force rescue teams, aided by rescue dogs and avalanche detection technology, were searching for the soldiers. The soldiers' status was unknown.
Four Indian soldiers died in an avalanche in the same area in December.
