DHARAMSHALA, India, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The Dalai Lama is traveling to the United States on Tuesday to undergo prostate treatment in Minnesota's Mayo Clinic.

"His Holiness the Dalai Lama is departing Dharamsala for the United States where he is scheduled to undergo prostate treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota followed by a period of rest from the end of January 2016 for approximately one month," the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama said in a statement. "His regular engagement schedule will resume in March."

The 80-year-old Buddhist leader frequents the Mayo Clinic, where he received an annual examination in September. He cancelled several appearances after he was prescribed rest during that visit.

The nature of his treatment was not revealed by his office.
