TOKYO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Fourteen people were killed when a tour bus taking a group of teens to a ski resort in central Japan veered off a mountain road early Friday, local authorities said.
The bus had left Tokyo and was headed to the popular ski resort Kita Shiga when it crashed near Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture about 2 a.m. Of the 14 killed, 12 were passengers and two were bus crew members. Twenty-seven others were being treated for various injuries.
The cause of the crash was not known. There was no snow or ice on the road when it crossed onto the opposite side of the road, broke through the guard rail and rolled down an embankment.
An investigation of the drivers and the company was underway. The company had been penalized and a vehicle suspended just two days earlier.
