ANKARA, Turkey, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Police in Turkey have arrested two suspected Islamic State militants accused of planning a suicide bomb attack set for New Year celebrations in Ankara.

The two men entered Turkey from Syria and police believe they were planning to attack the capital's Kizilay square -- a popular gathering location to celebrate the new year. Police arrested the men in the Mamak district in the outskirts of Ankara.

A chief prosecutor's office official said police seized suicide vests armed with bombs. More than 100 people were killed in Ankara during a peace rally in October after a suicide attack blamed on the Islamic State.

Turkey has been on high alert since the October attack, which preceded the Nov. 13 Islamic State attacks in Paris where at least 130 people were killed in a coordinated onslaught.
