ISTANBUL, Turkey, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The explosion at the metro station in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday was caused by a bomb, according to the latest reports.
At least one person has died and several were injured in the explosion at the Bayrampasa metro station in Istanbul at about 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
CNN Türk reports that security sources said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device.
The station has been evacuated and all trains have been suspended.
Onur Dugenci, a witness, told BBC News that he heard "a very, very loud bang."
"Later my family and friends called from other parts of the city and said they could hear it, too," Dugenci said. "There was no fire. But the explosion was so powerful that the windows on some cars were broken."
Initially, Turkish television station Haberturk reported that a power transformer may have exploded.
Electricity was cut off at the station and at nearby buildings after the explosion and all nearby roads were shut down.
