Canadian PM Trudeau meets with French President Hollande in Paris

PARIS, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with French President Francois Hollande in the Elysee Palace on Sunday to discuss global terrorism and the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Trudeau visited the Bataclan concert hall to pay silent tribute to the victims of the Islamic State's coordinated attacks in Paris. At least 130 people died in the assaults carried out Nov. 13.

At a joint press conference, Trudeau said he and Hollande discussed a "broad range" of topics, including free trade, climate change and the fight against the Islamic State.

"Canadians as a whole were extremely touched and affected deeply by the attacks, and it was an important opportunity to demonstrate that we stand firmly in sympathy and in resolve with the people of France -- indeed with everyone around the world in the fight again terror and the work to create peace and stability across the world," Trudeau said.

On the issue of the climate change negotiations that begin Monday, Trudeau said he was optimistic of a positive outcome. More than 190 countries will join talks in Paris to attempt reaching a deal to slow down climate change.

"I'm very pleased to be here with the president to talk about the issue of climate change, and we will be working together to ensure there is a positive outcome from these two weeks of discussions," Trudeau said.

Hollande praised the "lasting friendship" between France and Canada on the topic of international security.

"Terrorism is a threat against every country in the world. We have to unite our forces against this scourge," Hollande said, adding that the goal of the climate change talks is to "unite all nations to achieve an ambitious agreement."
