BAGHDAD, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Reports indicate Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may still be alive after a recent Iraqi Air Force bombing that targeted his apparent convoy.

Iraqi officials are collecting DNA from the scene of Sunday's airstrikes, but a U.S. military source told Fox News that Baghdadi was not hit.

Officials are also working to determine if Baghdadi was in the convoy at all.

Sputnik reports that Baghdadi was injured in the airstrike, but is currently in a hospital in the Iraqi city of Al-Qaim guarded by IS militants.

The Iraqi Air Force on Sunday said it bombed Baghdadi's convoy in the western province of Anbar.

The unconfirmed bombing was reportedly carried out as Baghdadi was traveling to a meeting of Islamic State commanders.

Baghdadi, born in Samarra in 1971, has taken personal credit for coordinating multiple attacks while operating as leader of the Islamic State, also known as ISIL, ISIS and Daesh.

Iraq's air force "bombed the convoy of the terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi while he was heading to Karabla to attend a meeting with Daesh commanders," according to a statement.

The U.S. Department of State in 2011 labeled Baghdadi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and offered a $10 million bounty.
