Israel orders expedited demolitions of Palestinian attackers' homes

JERUSALEM, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the formation of a committee that will legally expedite the demolition of homes belonging to Palestinians who attack Israelis.

Netanyahu instructed Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to form the committee after the conclusion of an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday. The meeting was called to create a government response to escalating violence in Jerusalem and Palestinian territories.

The recent violence in Israel has caused protests by both Israelis and Palestinians, some of which have turned violent.

Israeli security forces demolished the homes of Palestinians Ghassan Abu Jamal and Mohammed Jaabis on Tuesday.

Abu Jamal and his cousin Uday Abu Jamal allegedly launched an attack with meat cleavers and a gun at a synagogue in 2014 that killed four rabbis and an Israeli police officer. The men were both shot and killed by Israeli police.

Jaabis was accused of ramming a construction vehicle into a bus in August, killing an Israeli and injuring several others. He was also shot dead by police.

Thousands of additional soldiers and police will be deployed to Jerusalem as per the new security measures. Israel will also increase the number of security officials deployed to Palestinian territories whenever needed.

Israeli security will have the authority to enter Arab neighborhoods in the eastern part of Jerusalem to de-escalate rioting.

"Nobody will have immunity, anywhere," Netanyahu said after the announcement.

Israel previously banned East Jerusalem Palestinians from entering the Old City for two days after two Israelis were killed in recent violence.

On Saturday, Mohammad Halabi, a 19-year-old Palestinian law student, allegedly launched a knife and gun attack that killed two Israelis and injured a woman and her son. Halabi was shot and killed by Israeli police.

"We will not accept a situation where a Jewish woman is stabbed and not only do people not bother to help her but they also curse her and kick her," Netanyahu said Monday. "We will prosecute them to the full extent of the law."

Early Sunday, a 15-year-old Israeli was injured in a stabbing attack by a Palestinian teenager, who was also shot and killed by police.

"This evening, we approved stringent measures against terrorism by using a variety of means," Netanyahu said late Monday/ "We will continue to do whatever is necessary. Let us be clear -- we will defeat terrorism just as we have done in the past."
