GAZA, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Israeli fighter jets launched airstrikes in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday, reportedly in response to a rocket launched from the Palestinian territory toward Israel.
The Israeli military said the rocket from Gaza was shot down by its Iron Dome anti-missile system over Ashdod, a city with a population of 245,000. The Islamic State-affiliated group Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade claimed responsibility, allegedly in response to the killing of an 18-year-old in Hebron last week.
In the retaliation strike, the Israeli air force hit four Hamas sites in Gaza. No damage or injuries were reported.
Israel Defense Forces Spokesman, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said Hamas is to blame for the rocket attacks.
"Hamas is responsible and will be held accountable for every attack emanating from the Gaza Strip. The IDF will continue defending all Israelis who are repeatedly attacked by such blatant acts of aggression," he said.
Hamas has not claimed responsibility.
