LATAKIA, Syria, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- At least 15 people died and dozens more were injured Wednesday after a car bomb detonated outside Iman Ali school on the northern edges of Latakia.

Syrian state TV said a white van loaded with explosives and parked at the city's Hamam Square detonated, causing massive damages to surrounding vehicles, homes and properties.

Explosions in the city have been rare during the ongoing conflict between Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and an array of rebel groups, including Islamic extremists. Last month, six people died and more than a dozen were injured after rebels shelled the port city.

"These acts will only make the Syrian people, leadership and people more resolved to continue to fight terrorism," Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi said.
