ISLAMABAD, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday in Islamabad to discuss militant attacks and the future of diplomatic relations.

Talks between Rice and Sharif were focused on "terrorist and militant attacks emanating from Pakistani soil," according to the U.S. Department of State. After the meeting, Sharif's office noted the talks were on matters of mutual interest and the future of U.S.-Pakistan relations.

Rice also met with Sartaj Aziz, Sharif's adviser on national security and foreign policy, before meeting with Gen. Raheel Sharif, Pakistan's military chief. Rice reportedly discussed Pakistan's role as mediator in efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban.

The Taliban and Afghani government have been attempting to reach a peace deal, but efforts have been derailed since the announcement of the death of Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban's leader.

Sharif may visit Washington D.C. in October, according to several Pakistani officials, but no official announcement has been made by the United States.
