The army has made significant gains against Boko Haram in norther Nigeria in recent months. Newly-inaugurated President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to eradicate the group, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and is attempting to build a Muslim caliphate of its own in Nigeria.

Boko Haram has killed about 5,500 civilians in Nigeria since 2014 and over 12,000 since 2012. Human rights activists Amnesty International has claimed at least 2,000 women and children have been abducted since the start of 2014.
