Nine suspected criminals killed in Mexican border town shootout

RIO BRAVO, Mexico, July 27 (UPI) -- At least nine suspected criminals were killed in a shootout with Mexican police who were on patrol in the city of Rio Bravo, which borders the United States.

Tamaulipas state police were on patrol in the border city of Río Bravo when they were assaulted by a group of armed men Saturday evening, according to the Tamaulipas Coordination Group.

"A convoy of the Tamaulipas Force conducted ground surveys when they encountered armed civilians who were traveling in several vehicles, who started the attack with guns to avoid arrest," Tamaulipas authorities said in a statement. "To repel the attack, they shot down nine of the criminals, who are still unidentified."

Eight were killed on the scene and one was found dead inside a vehicle after the shootout.

Police seized two vehicles, nine rifles, ammunition of different calibers and tactical gear, among other objects.
