BEIJING, July 21 (UPI) -- China's authorities have detained five people after a sex video filmed inside a fitting room at a Uniqlo store in Beijing went viral online.
The video, which lasted a minute and was shot on a smartphone, had collected millions of views and thousands of comments last week before copies were taken down, Fortune reported.
The five arrested included the young couple that filmed themselves having sex in the changing room. The New York Times reported a 19-year-old man from a northeastern Chinese town was arrested for uploading the video to Sina Weibo, but it was unclear whether he was the young man featured in the sex video.
According to local police, all five were detained on "suspicion of spreading obscene content."
Uniqlo has denied any involvement in the video, after Chinese commenters had said they suspected the footage was part of a marketing ploy the Japanese retailer was using to lure more customers.
"We would like to remind all customers to abide by society's moral standard... and properly and appropriately use our fitting rooms," Uniqlo said in statement.
Uniqlo said no staff member was detained.
But the footage was drawing unlikely visitors to the store, including young Chinese looking to take selfies before the three-story flagship.
"I came here because of the clip," a young Chinese man told CNN, as he took a photo before what has become a famous landmark in Beijing's Sanlitun district.
Chinese authorities have chided officials of the largest Internet companies and admonished them to "raise their sense of social responsibility."
