A spokesman for ER24, a private paramedic service, said there were some serious injuries, but no deaths reported.

"We're seeing things like soft tissue injuries - and more serious issues like spinal injuries and fractures and breaks," he said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told News24, a local news station, one of the trains derailed. The cause of the crash was being investigated.

Some of those injured were transported to local hospitals, while others were being treated on the scene by paramedics.
