PAMPLONA, Spain, July 7 (UPI) -- Three men were gored and 10 others were injured on Tuesday in Pamplona, Spain, at the start of the San Fermín festival's annual Running of the Bulls.

One man was gored in the chest and another was gored "between the anus and genitals," The Telegraph reports. The men are not thought to be in life-threatening conditions.

The run lasted 2 minutes and 23 seconds as the bulls stomped through the half-mile course through the cobbled streets of Pamplona's old town, knocking down many people dressed in the traditional red and white colors.

Many of the injured "suffered facial traumas or injuries to arms and legs," according to a hospital spokesman.

Fifteen people have died since records of the festival began in 1911, causing organizers to implement safety rules; people running must wear proper footwear, people are not allowed to be inebriated and bulls cannot be harassed.

The last death occurred in 2009, when the bull "Capuchino" gored Daniel Jimeno, 27, from Madrid, in the neck.

About 100 activists for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Anima Naturalis protested on Saturday over the traditional festival -- covering themselves in fake blood, wearing fake horns and holding signs reading "Pamplona's streets are stained with bull's blood" written in several languages.

"Dozens of bulls suffer injuries while participants follow them, hit them and terrorise them along the route to their death", the groups said in a joint statement.
