Michelle Obama promotes girls' education, sips tea with Prince Harry

LONDON, June 16 (UPI) -- First lady Michelle Obama, her mother and two daughters are visiting the U.K. to promote education for girls.

Her trip, which began with tea at Downing Street with Prince Harry on Tuesday, aims to promote Obama's campaign for girls education and increased support for military families. Obama was also scheduled to meet British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, during the trip.

Obama has a historically amicable relationship with the prince, who was a surprise guest at her Mother's Day event in the U.S. in 2013.

Obama hosted an event at the Mulberry School for Girls in East London to promote the "Let Girls Learn" initiative. Students got the chance to question Obama and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who is chairwoman of the board of the Global Partnership for Education.

Obama praised the U.K. as a leader in girls' education, citing a joint initiative that involved a $180 million investment in Democratic Republic of Congo.

After the two-day visit, Obama will fly to Italy to attend the Milan Expo and meet U.S. armed service families based in Europe.
