KABUL, Afghanistan, May 25 (UPI) -- Five people were killed dead and nearly 70 were injured when a suicide bomber drove an explosive-packed truck into a government compound in southern Afghanistan.

The truck exploded in Qalat, the capital of Zabul Province, near the building where Zabul's provincial council is housed. At least three council members were injured.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, revealing the name of the bomber as Sabawoon. At least 70 people were injured, including 17 women and seven police officers.

In April, the Taliban launched its annual spring offensive, stepping up attacks on Afghan government buildings.
