North Korea executes defense chief Hyon Yong-chol

PYONGYANG, North Korea, May 12 (UPI) -- North Korea executed Defense Chief Hyon Yong-chol on treason charges, South Korea's spy agency said Wednesday.

The head of North Korea's People's Armed Forces was executed by a firing squad using an anti-aircraft gun, the South Korean National Intelligence Service said, quoted by Yonhap News Agency. He was executed before hundreds of officials.

Hyon allegedly showed disrespect to Kim Jong-un by falling asleep during a military event attended by the leader.
