MOSCOW, May 10 (UPI) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War II.

Merkel skipped main events on Saturday, but she showed up on Sunday and paid tribute to Soviet losses.

"It's necessary for us to work, to cooperate including over complicated situations - the way the situation is now - and try to find diplomatic solutions," Merkel said after the wreath-laying ceremony.

Putin and Merkel were set to discuss Ukraine, and it appears Merkel is not pleased with Putin's military actions in Ukraine.

The United States did not send any leaders to the event, which Putin noted during his televised speech. "Everyone we wanted to see was here," he said.
