CABO SAN LUCAS , Mexico, March 12 (UPI) -- A tourist was killed when a whale leapt from the water near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and crashed into a sightseeing boat.

Two others were injured in the incident Wednesday morning, the tour company Cabo Adventures reported. The fatality was a Canadian tourist, Jennifer Carren, 35, who was hospitalized but pronounced dead.

"The captain had to make a movement to avoid a whale that surfaced just in front of the boat," a Cabo Adventures statement said. "The whale hit one side of the boat."

The collision between the whale and the boat, which had 24 people aboard, occurred on the Pacific Ocean side of the resort town at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Cabo San Lucas includes whale-watching as its attractions, as whales annually migrate from Arctic waters to the vicinity from December to April.

Prior to the accident, Mexican authorities announced the grey whale population in the area this season was unusually large.
