JERUSALEM, March 6 (UPI) -- A Palestinian man has been arrested after allegedly striking five people, including four border guards, with his vehicle in Jerusalem on Friday.

Israeli Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld identified the suspect as a man in his 20s from Rasel Amud in Jerusalem.

Rosenfeld provided updates on the unfolding security situation via Twitter, writing that four policewomen suffered moderate injuries and had been transported to hospitals. A fifth person, identified in media reports as a cyclist, was also injured.

According to witnesses, the man appeared to target the victims by maneuvering his vehicle off the road to hit them.

The "terrorist was shot [by a security officer] and arrested," Rosenfeld reported, adding that "heightened security continues in Jerusalem after terror attack this morning."

Hamas issued a statement applauding the attack but did not claim responsibility.

"Hamas movement blesses this historic act and considers it a natural response to the Occupation crimes," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri posted on Facebook.
