American missionary kidnapped in Nigeria released

EMIWORO, Nigeria, March 6 (UPI) -- Phyllis Sortor, an American missionary worker with the Free Methodist Church kidnapped last month in Nigeria was released Friday, her church said.

Sortor, 71, was "safely released" Friday evening, a statement on the Seattle church's website said.

"We are deeply grateful to all who prayed for Phyllis' safe return and praise God the family representative was able to secure her release," the statement said.

Sortor was abducted Feb. 24 from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo in Kogi state.

"As a matter of sound policy, and to help protect the many, many people who helped secure Phyllis' freedom, we will have no comment concerning the efforts that were undertaken to secure her release," the church said.
