SEOUL, March 4 (UPI) -- Mark Lippert, the U.S. ambassador to Seoul, was rushed to the hospital Thursday morning after he was attacked by an armed assailant.

Lippert was on his way to a lecture in central Seoul when an attacker injured him with a small razor blade.

The suspect, whose name wasn't reported, was immediately arrested.

Lippert, who was bleeding, was rushed to a hospital, sources told Yonhap News Agency. His injuries are non-life-threatening, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.

Lippert was named ambassador to South Korea in May 2014.

"The President called U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Mark Lippert, to tell him that he and his wife Robyn are in his thoughts and prayers, and to wish him the very best for a speedy recovery," said Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokesperson.
