Treviño-Morales became the leader of Los Zetas after his brother Miguel Treviño was arrested in July 2013. The Los Zetas group is believed to be behind rising violence in Mexico.

The U.S. Department of State was offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Treviño-Morales.

He is believed to be responsible for several abductions and murders and for supplying multikilogram loads of cocaine smuggled from Mexico to the United States, according to the State Department.
