LONDON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Former British glam rocker Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was sentenced to 16 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing young girls.

Gadd was convicted in early February of one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.

The assaults took place between 1975 and 1980. One of the girls came forward with the story of when Gadd attempted to assault her after hearing about child pornography charges against the rocker. The judge mentioned the long-term damage to Gadd's victims.

"You did all of them real and lasting damage and you did so for no other reason than to obtain sexual gratification for yourself of a wholly improper kind," said Judge Alistair McCreath.

McCreath assessed the charges by current guidelines but was restricted to sentencing based on the guidelines of the time of the offenses when sentencing was lighter.

Gadd is 70 years old.
