AL-ARISH, Egypt, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- At least 20 people died and dozens of others were injured Thursday in multiple militant attacks across Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

More than a dozen attacks took place at army and police positions in the volatile region. The attacks appeared to be coordinated.

Various media reports said the death toll stood between 20 and 25 people, including civilians. At least 36 people were injured.

The simultaneous attacks included car bombs and mortar rounds fired in the towns of al-Arish, Sheikh Zuwayed and Rafa. The North Sinai security directorate in al-Arish, a nearby army base, a hotel and other security checkpoints were targeted.

The region has been under a dusk-to-dawn curfew since October when militants attacked a checkpoint, killing dozens of soldiers.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Thursday's attacks.
