MEXICO CITY, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A truck carrying liquid natural gas to a Mexico City maternity hospital exploded Thursday, killing at least two people.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera corrected earlier reports that put the death toll between three and seven.

The Cuajimalpa Maternal Hospital in suburban Mexico City was partially destroyed by the blast, and the remaining sections were about to collapse, with people trapped trapped within, emergency officials said. Mancera said at least 54 people were injured, many by flying glass, including 22 children.

The two dead included a woman and a child.

The truck was delivering natural gas to the hospital when a hose burst, and the resulting leak fueled an explosion, Mancera said.

The Red Cross reported it sent 23 ambulances to the scene, and nine infants were transferred to other area hospitals.

The explosion was so powerful it was captured on a webcam in downtown Mexico City, over 10 miles away.
