TOKYO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Amazon said it is "cooperating fully" after Japanese police raided its Tokyo offices as part of an investigation into the alleged distribution of child pornography.

"We don't permit illegal items on our site, and we have systems and processes designed to prevent and remove illegal items from being listed," Amazon said in a statement.

New laws governing child pornography were enacted in June 2014, although the wording of the law reportedly left room for interpretation to the extent that retailers reached out to police to verify the legality of certain products.

"It's extremely difficult to say whether these materials can be classified as child pornography," said Ryoji Mori, an attorney at Cyber Law Japan Eichi Law Offices in Tokyo, referring to the sale of photobooks and DVDs containing images of "scantily clad pre-pubescent girls."

Friday's raid followed the arrest of two men in September in connection with the sale of books on Amazon Japan's website that contained images of underage girls.
