Protests continue in Bahrain over extended detention of opposition leader

Daily protests over the continued detention of opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman have been met by government-deployed "rubber bullets and bird shot firearms" and "an excessive use of toxic tear gas," al-Wefaq reported Monday.

MANAMA, Bahrain, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Protests continued in Bahrain on Monday in response to the continued detention of opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

Salman was arrested Dec. 28 after leading an anti-government rally with thousands of other Shia Muslims from the al-Wefaq movement.

"The regime in Bahrain has decided to renew the detention of al-Wefaq's secretary general, Sheikh Ali Salman, for another 15 days," al-Wefaq announced on its website Monday.

Daily protests have been met by government-deployed "rubber bullets and bird shot firearms" and "an excessive use of toxic tear gas," the political opposition party noted.

Video footage uploaded to YouTube on Sunday showed the police firing tear gas canisters at seemingly unarmed protesters in the streets.
