Earthquake recorded off coast of Philippines

MANILA, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Monday near the island of Mindanao, Philippines Monday.

The earthquake happened at about 9:30 a.m. local time. Less violent aftershocks are expected as well as possible tsunamis and fires, the most common hazard after an earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

One of the nearest cities from the epicenter is Cagayancillo in the islands of Palawan, 70 miles away.
