SANAA, Yemen, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- At least seven Yemeni soldiers were killed and nine wounded after two car bombs detonated on a Yemeni military base Tuesday.
Al-Qaida affiliate Ansar al Sharia claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in the southern Yemeni city of Seyoun.
"A number of the injured are in critical condition," said a medic at Seyoun General Hospital. "Some of the injured were not close to the explosions but it was a powerful attack."
Two other soldiers were killed by the same group in an ambush late Monday.
Military operations have been going badly in the region. A U.S.-led rescue mission in Yemen failed Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 11 people including an American photojournalist and a South African teacher. The two were fatally shot by their captors during the U.S. mission.
