South Korea fishing boat sinks off Russia coast

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A South Korean fishing boat sank Monday off the coast of Russia's eastern Chukotka peninsula.

According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the 1,753-ton trawler took on seawater in bad weather, causing the ship to list. The vessel became stranded around 2:20 p.m. Korean time.

The 60-person crew, which included 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and one Russian inspector, sought help from a nearby ship and the Russian maritime rescue service.

South Korea's foreign ministry said it contacted the Russian government to request expedited search and rescue assistance.

Seven people were rescued, including one Russian and citizens of Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea, Russian media reported.
