MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Tabare Vazquez has won Uruguay's presidential election, and that means he'll be dealing with a lot of the plans laid out by famed Jose Mujica.

Vazquez won the election with 53.9 percent of the votes, compared to his conservative opponent Luis Lacalle Pou, who received only 40.7 percent.

The 74-year-old was already president from 2005 to 2010, and he will now follow Jose Mujica, who has been recognized for his liberal policies concerning marijuana, abortion and gay marriage. Vazquez has stated publicly it is unlikely he will repeal the legislation regarding the legalization of marijuana, but he may alter it somewhat. His contender, Pou, stated he would repeal the legislation if he was elected.

Vazquez hopes to lower poverty and improve education as president, which are topics that are very important to citizens of Uruguay.

Vazquez is from the same political party as Mujica, which makes his election the longest a political party has maintained office in Uruguay in 40 years, according to Bloomberg.
