PARIS, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Two jewelry store robbers were arrested after leading Paris police on a high-speed chase across the Seine River and taking a hair salon manager hostage for two hours.

The incident began Tuesday evening when two armed men, ages 23 and 30, entered the Cartier jewelry store on Champs Elysees. Thirteen staff and customers were inside. One woman was dragged outside the store at gunpoint and released.

According to police spokesman Luc Poignant, the thieves shot at the responding officers and police returned fire.

The robbers fled the scene by motorbike and attempted to evade police by holing up in a nearby hair salon.

"They rushed into the first shop they could find and they took the manager of this hair salon hostage," said Philippe Goujoun, mayor of the 15th arrondissement.

Two hours later, the thieves surrendered with their hands in the air.

Police recovered an unspecified number of stolen jewels.
