Argentina's President Fernandez, hospitalized with fever, now 'stable'

BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, hospitalized on Sunday with an "infectious fever," is now "in a stable condition," her doctors reported.

Fernandez checked herself into a private hospital in Buenos Aires after feeling ill.

She was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in the colon. It is unclear when the president will be released from the hospital. Her doctors said that, once discharged, she will have to rest for at least 10 days.

Fernandez, 61, elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2011, has had a history of health problems. She had surgery last year to relieve bleeding on the brain and missed this year's Independence Day celebrations because of a throat infection.

This latest medical issue has forced her to withdraw from next week's G20 Summit in Brisbane.
