THE HAGUE , Netherlands, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Additional human remains from Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which crashed over Ukraine in July, were recovered Friday, the Dutch mission in Ukraine said Friday.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte made the announcement in The Hague, adding, "The team recovered human remains from the so-called burn site" where the plane struck the ground after allegedly being shot down.

The recovery team took advantage of a lull in the fighting between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists to visit the site with officials from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. It was the first time in weeks the recovery team could safely travel there.

The crash killed 298 passengers and crew, the majority of them Dutch nationals. Thus far, 289 victims have been identified. Each side in the conflict blames the other for shooting down the plane.

The remains found Friday were transported to Kharkiv, Ukraine, for a preliminary forensic check, and will be sent to the Netherlands for identification.
