U.N.'s Ban Ki-moon calls for peaceful resolution to Hong Kong protests

The secretary-general "understands that this is a domestic matter, but urges all stakeholders to resolve any differences in a manner that is peaceful and safeguards democratic principles," Ban's spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters on Tuesday.

NEW YORK, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon weighed in Tuesday on the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

The protests began Friday, with a growing mass of demonstrators calling for elections to determine the successor to Hong Kong's chief executive, Leung Chun-ying.

The secretary-general "understands that this is a domestic matter, but urges all stakeholders to resolve any differences in a manner that is peaceful and safeguards democratic principles," his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters on Tuesday.

When asked whether the U.N. head believes residents have the right to demonstrate, Dujarric reiterated that Ban urges a peaceful resolution that "safeguards democratic principles."
