NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are expected to meet Wednesday with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

As the international coalition efforts to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria move forward, there must be a coordinated strategy in place, a senior White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told UPI Tuesday.

Obama and Kerry will sit down with Abadi to discuss how that international assistance is directed to help Iraq counter IS militants.

The leaders will ask Abadi for an update on the status of both Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga forces to better determine the military assistance that is needed.

U.S. officials will also ask the Iraqi prime minister for an update on his efforts to form an inclusive government, the official added. U.S. and Iraqi leadership have maintained that an inclusive government is central for Iraq to regain control over the divided country and defeat IS.
