DAMASCUS, Syria, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Syrian rebels fighting against President Bashar al Assad are building homemade howitzers and calling them "Hell Cannons" in hopes of rallying sympathizers to win their independence.

Similar to the 105mm M101A1 Howitzers used by the United States, the hell cannon is towed or pushed on a two wheel cart and can fire a variety of ammunition and projectiles up to one mile.

The Hell Cannon's primary ammunition is a modified propane gas cylinder filled with an explosive mix and guided through the air by stabilizing fins.

Despite being equal parts intimidating and innovative, the Hell Cannon is fighting a war against tanks and aircraft from Assad's forces, and the increasingly growing presence of the Islamic State.
