WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The identity of the Islamic State militant who beheaded U.S. journalist James Foley is "close" to being known, Peter Westmacott, the British ambassador to the United States.

In an appearance Sunday on CNN's State of the Union, Westmacott said he couldn't give further details about the killer's identity, but "we are close" to identifying him.

In a video depicting the killing, the IS militant can be heard speaking with a British accent.

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said it's "increasingly likely" the killer is a British citizen.
