Ukrainian PM Yatsenyuk insists Indepdence Day celebration will go forward

Independence Day celebrations will be held August 24, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk declared Wednesday while underlining the need for security services to disrupt any planned terror attacks by Russian-backed militants.

KIEV, Ukraine, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- In the face of continuing aggression from Russia, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk reaffirmed Wednesday that Independence Day celebrations will go forward on August 24.

He called on the Ministry of Interior to implement safety measures to protect citizens.

"I draw the attention of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure public order before the Independence Day. We will celebrate our independence, we are fighting for our independence and we gave lives for our independence. Historic words of the Ukrainian national anthem came true..."

Yatsenyuk noted that Russian-backed militants are planning terror attacks to further destabilize the country, and directed the interior ministry and Security Service of Ukraine to "intensify" their efforts to locate and stop the militants.
