MUMBAI, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- More than 150 people are dead after heavy rainfall deluged Nepal and India, according to officials in the two countries.
An additional 100 people are still missing in the low-lying areas of Nepal, said Nepal Ministry of Home Affairs spokesman Laxmi Prasad Dhakal. Nepal asked India to open three dams to relieve flooding in the region, but the rush of water caused fatalities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, reports the New York Times.
"Eastern Uttar Pradesh is prone to floods, but this particular case is due to the sudden release of water from Nepal," Alok Ranjan, chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, said Monday.
Dhakal said efforts are being directed to the recovery of dead bodies and getting humanitarian assistance to those survivors.
Floods have been a persistent problem in both Nepal and India this month. Flooding along the Nepal-China border killed 156 people and landslides have killed 27 in India.
