Iceland warns of possible volcanic eruption

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Iceland's Bárðarbunga volcano is at increased risk of eruption, Iceland's meteorological agency warned Monday.

Citing "intense seismic activity that started on 16 of August" and "evidence of magma movement shallower than 10km," the Met reported there is an "increased potential of volcanic eruption."

The Met noted that because of the increased risk, it has raised the aviation color code level to orange in line with International Civil Aviation Organization procedures.

According to the aviation color code map, level orange is assigned when a "Volcano shows heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption."

The Met acknowledged that "Presently there are no signs of eruption" but noted that "it cannot be excluded that the current activity will result in an explosive subglacial eruption, leading to an outburst flood... and ash emission."

In 2010, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, disrupting European air travel.
