WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The White House commended Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on his decision to step down from office in order to allow his newly named replacement, Haider al-Abadi, to move forward with government formation.
Maliki's resignation comes after days of a tense political standoff in which Maliki's words and actions raised concern of a potential coup.
