GENEVA, Switzerland, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The World Health Organization issued an update Wednesday regarding the deadly outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.

A total of 1,975 people have been infected in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone as of August 11. WHO noted that 1,069 of those infected people have died.

The distribution and classification of the cases are as follows:

-- Guinea, 510 cases (369 confirmed, 133 probable, and 8 suspected), including 377 deaths;

-- Liberia, 670 cases (166 confirmed, 358 probable, and 146 suspected), including 355 deaths;

-- Nigeria, 12 cases (0 confirmed, 10 probable, and 2 suspected), including 3 deaths;

-- Sierra Leone, 783 cases (706 confirmed, 38 probable, and 39 suspected), including 334 deaths.

Last week, WHO declared the outbreak a "public health emergency" and noted that "This is currently the largest EVD outbreak ever recorded."

In order to manage the outbreak, WHO reported Wednesday it "is finalizing its strategic operations response plan and expects to share this with countries and partners in the coming days. Mapping is also underway to develop an operational picture in order to coordinate and move people and materials to areas of greatest need."

On Monday, a panel of medical ethicists, scientists, and representatives from the countries affected by the Ebola outbreak were brought together by WHO to consider the use of untested drugs in response to the outbreak. The panel ruled that experimental drugs can be ethically used to combat Ebola.
